Diabetes nurses to aid roll-out of ‘artificial pancreas’ tech in Scotland
Specialist diabetes nurses are set to be part of a new group in Scotland dedicated to supporting the roll-out of an innovative device for people with type 1 diabetes.
The Scottish Government has pledged a further £350,000 for widening the availability of closed loop systems – also known as an artificial pancreas.

Closed loop systems are a relatively new diabetes management tool which, the Scottish Government said, would particularly improve the lives of children and young people with the condition.
In diabetes care, a closed loop system is when an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor are linked and “talk” to each other in order to adjust insulin doses.
The devices will now become more widely available, the government hopes, due to the extra funding and approval from the accelerated national innovation adoption (ANIA) programme the Scottish Government has set up.
A team featuring specialist diabetes nurses, diabetes dietitians, and other healthcare professionals is being assembled to help further accelerate the roll-out of closed loop system technology in the Scottish NHS.
The national Centre for Sustainable Delivery, overseen by NHS Golden Jubilee, is putting the team together, and is currently recruiting.
Professor Brian Kennon, Scottish national diabetes lead, said: “Closed loop systems are truly transformative technologies and help reduce the day-to-day burden of trying to optimise type 1 diabetes control.
“Creation of a dedicated team to help support the adoption of closed loop systems and standardise our approach to access across Scotland will help ensure that our healthcare system is well placed to realise the massive advantages that these innovative technologies offer.”
Public health minister Jenni Minto praised the new technology for its potential to ease the lives of diabetes patients.
“There’s no reason why someone living with type 1 diabetes shouldn’t live a long and healthy life, but some people find managing their condition difficult,” said the minister.
She added: “Diabetes technologies make the process easier and can enhance people’s quality of life. That’s why we’re aiming to provide access to closed loop systems at the earliest opportunity and are working with NHS boards to improve access.”
This funding is the latest step in the Scottish Government’s diabetes improvement plan, which it updated in 2021. Since then, £19.6m has been invested to increase the provision of diabetes technologies.
